Anniversary
BalkanPac tenth edition |
|
With the improving economic climate in Bulgaria, not only the quality of the goods but also the quality of the packaging is at a much higher standard. The efforts towards a free market mechanisms and increased imports have resulted in greater consumer expectations towards the quality of packages and packaging materials. Increasing competition among the Bulgarian producers also drives them at more attractive and higher quality packages. All this generates the need for more active exchange of know-how and best practices, applying of new technologies and searching for new markets.
These trends have influence on the exhibition industry as well. The number of the exhibitors and the visitors interest are increasing with every year due to the diverse contacts and the new partnerships created during the international specialized forums. For all these reasons Balkan Pac is an attractive place for business activities. Many foreign companies, entering the Bulgarian market for the first time, will participate in the event. Balkan Pac is not an ordinary trade show - it is the right b2b event for the packaging industry.
The specialists will be able to see products and services from , which is organized by the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade (Instituto Nazionale per il Commercio Estero)
Again this year at the opening of BalkanPac the annual award will be given to the best packaging. This competition is a great opportunity for the new, high quality and functional packaging materials and packages to be distinguished and above all popularized.
The parallel events will help specialists in their ambition to be more competitive. There will be many new and interesting moments in the program. The companies will especially benefit from the training seminars. The seminar “How to prepare a project for the EU programs” aims at developing certain practical skills. In a creative environment are discussed particular ideas and, which is more important, the basic elements of a project – objectives, grounds, activities, methodology, budget, etc. With this practically oriented training Via Expo offers an opportunity for learning the basic things that can be of use when a company decides to apply for one of the EU programs. The international exhibition BalkanPac organized by Via Expo, is in fact a mix of business, training and brainstorming events during which visitors, exhibitors, lectors and VIP guests can exchange new ideas and establish long-lasting partnerships.

“Prize Pack”
Packaging? It's not easy at all! |
|
According to the famous saying the tailor makes the man. This saying is even more true when packaging, this unique “clothing” for everything that we buy – food, drinks or whatever other article, is concerned. And we have hardly ever thought about what in fact the package is. Is it only a shiny bait for the customer, or is it a convenient and reliable protection for the packed food or for the drink in the beautiful bottle.
In fact the modern package is put in the context of more and more uncompromising regulations about food safety and therefore it should meet a number of serious requirements. According to the European directives and the harmonized Bulgarian law – the law for foods and the law for the technical requirements for the products, each manufacturer is obliged to provide and to guarantee the quality and safety of the product that he manufactures.
With the idea to distinguish and popularize new packaging for food and non-food products, that meet all these requirements, five years ago the “Prize Pack” union organized the first national competition for best packaging “Prize Pack 2002”. The packages that participate in the competition should present the packed goods in the best possible way and at the same time with their physical, mechanical and chemical properties to guarantee safe and functional storage and transport, multiple use, recycling or destroying without pollution of the environment. At least at first sight this is one very hard to achieve combination of qualities…
The awards at the last year competition were given to “Bottling company Izvor” PLC, Varna, which won two prizes for its PET gallons of 19 and 11 litres, designed for packing and preservation of mineral water, and to “Radulov” LTD., Stara Zagora for a 0.3 l PET silver, non-transparent bottle, designed for packing and preservation of soft drinks.
The work on the fifth edition of the competition “Prize Pack 2006” has already begun. The first applications has been made, but the organizers are convinced that there will be much more Bulgarian and foreign companies manufacturing packages and their partners – the manufacturers of food, drinks, cosmetics, medicines, etc., that are sure of the quality of their production and will be presented at “Prize Pack 2006”.

Anelia Karanova, Project manger
The Bulgarian market opens up for foreign companies
Great interest towards the anniversary edition of BalkanPac
Mrs. Karanova, the tenth edition of the international exhibition BalkanPac for packaging, machines and materials and the ninth edition of Balkan Food & Drinks for food, drinks and equipment will take place from 1 to 4 November in Festivalna Hall. How do you evaluate the past years performance?
The packaging industry is developing very fast in all parts of the world. According to a research of Freedonia Group, the demand for packages in the USA is growing with 2,8% every year. Plastic packages have registered the biggest increase – 4,4% on the average. The most serious consumer in all countries is the food industry. These trends are observed on the Bulgarian market as well, although they are developing at a slower rate. The economic changes in the country during the past years had a great influence on the quality of the produced packaging. The increased import and the intensified competition lead to bigger demand for high quality and attractive packages.
And yet what are the most characteristic features of the exhibitions?
Our exhibitions are visited exclusively by specialists – manufacturers and dealers. Such is our company philosophy that we have worked out through the years. Besides, it has proved that the market needs professional solutions and we try to show them. More than 50% of the exhibitors are companies that are presented on our market for the first time. These are either Bulgarian importers and manufacturers or foreign companies looking for partners in Bulgaria. In 2005, for example, we had direct exhibitors from 14 different countries in Europe and Asia, which showed their products at Balkan Food & Drinks and BalkanPac. The exhibitions offer a great opportunity to meet new people and exchange experience. And this always creates new ideas.
What show the results of your statistics – where are the most visitors from?
Approximately 40% are from all regions of the country. Here I would like to make a small parenthesis. Managers of leading companies in the country spare their time to come to Sofia for a few days. They understand how important is to meet face-to-face with colleagues and partners. And as we are talking about figures, 5 to 11% of our visitors are from abroad. Most of them are from Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro, Turkey, Greece. But there are also visitors from Western Europe. The Bulgarian companies are much wanted subcontractors. It is important to mention that during the exhibitions contacts are established not only between exhibitors and visitors, but also among the visitors themselves and among all participants in the various parallel events. We are trying to open the Bulgarian food, drinks and packaging market for the European consumer and manufacturer.
There is also a big interest from foreign companies. Do you expect new exhibitors this year and from which countries?
Yes, there is an interest and it is growing with every year. This is revealed by the observations and researches that we carry out during and after the show. We work long and hard in order for our exhibitors to feel comfortable and which is more important to do their job. Again this year the visitors will be able to meet exhibitors from Bulgaria. But there will be also new for our market companies from Turkey, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Spain, Italy, Greece, Macedonia, Serbia, Poland.
What is the future of these exhibitions? What do you think about their development on the threshold of the European Union? This is the last year and you are probably prepared for the upcoming membership with new ideas for the exhibition industry.
The exhibitions will continue to offer visitors and exhibitors more and more opportunities for establishing new contacts and for proving the qualities of their products in one highly competitive environment. It should be clear that many more foreign companies will enter our market. On the European market the Bulgarian manufactures will have more opportunities for potential partnerships with visitors from abroad who come at our exhibitions with a purpose and bring with them their business and technological culture and new management. Our exhibitions are in fact unique business, training and brainstorming events, during which visitors, exhibitors, lectors and VIP guests form a joint mix that stimulates the future development of the food and packaging industries.
